I feel polarity is a super useful concept to have when exploring consciousness.

To start off, see the diagram above and understand that polarity at it’s most basic is the idea that within every concept there’s two energies, and a balance between them. They all fall into the category of masculine & feminine - understand that ‘feminine’ and ‘masculine’ are the two fundamental energies of the Universe. If it helps, think of it as one and zero - something and nothing. They don’t mean gender - we’re gendered because of these poles being a basic mechanic. There’s also a spectrum between the binary, as seen above. Our bodies usually being one of two sexes, and the energies we contain internally and express externally are almost byproducts of these fundamental aspects of the Universe’s mechanics. I’m assuming because you’re here doing this course, that you’re not balking at the idea that everyone contains all of these energies to varying degrees, so I won’t go about trying to convince you harder.

It’s almost disadvantageous to label these Universal energies feminine and masculine because it makes a lot of people contract and close their minds because of how we relate it to human concepts. But really what we’re talking about is receiving (fem) and expressing (masc) - just like a magnet; one side pushes out, the other pulls in.

So, drop the idea that we’re talking about men & women here. Femininity isn’t exclusive to men, masculinity isn’t exclusive to women. Part of the mechanic that we used to stay unconscious so long was society programming us all to train women more into the feminine pole, and men more into the masculine pole, and all of us out of the emotional body and exclusively into the mind and physical world. Them’s just facts. Nowadays as a reflection of us coming out of the binary of black and white thinking, we’ve opened up to spectrum consciousness - understanding that there’s a whole infinity between one and zero. We see this in mathematics, in the exploration of gender and sexuality, in understanding the psyche having many different components instead of pretending all the beautiful multitudes within don't exist, etc. To me it’s the foundation of thinking in paradox.

yin yang

The Taoists clocked this fundamental mechanism with the cutting elegance of the Yin Yang symbol
- here’s some more concepts that fit within feminine & masculine, read them as pairs:

The white aspect is masculine (Yang):

  • Doing

  • Active

  • Giving

  • Initiating

  • Direction

  • Logic

  • Thinking

  • Control

  • Structure

  • Clarity

  • Movement

  • Light

  • Known

  • Linear

  • External

  • Expressing

  • Providing

  • Attraction

  • Action

  • Discipline

  • Penetration

  • Convex

  • Addition

The black aspect is feminine (Yin):

  • Being

  • Passive

  • Receiving

  • Allowing

  • Flow

  • Intuition

  • Feeling

  • Surrender

  • Softness

  • Depth

  • Stillness

  • Dark

  • Mystery

  • Cyclical

  • Internal

  • Listening

  • Nourishing

  • Magnetism

  • Presence

  • Wildness

  • Embrace

  • Concave

  • Subtraction

The way that my brain does polarity is simple: masc is out/express - fem is in/receive. All the rest is true but they’re my key words. If the Universe is made of Atoms, the masc is the Atom and the fem is the space between them; the Void. We have seen within science that we can go down smaller and smaller within Atoms, but it’s an unnecessary concept to keep digging into here.

poles within poles

Next we gotta address the little dots of opposite energy within those halves - see, when you sway hard into one pole, naturally you find the opposite side of the pole. If you’re in stillness eventually the pressure builds and movement must happen. Under total control, collapse is inevitable, leading to surrender. When you dive hard into internal/Universal logic - and I mean hard, you understand the mechanics of intuition. Without each other, there is no Universe. Every system in the Universe is a union of these opposites. Anything that’s pushed too far in attempt to remove one of these energies, eventually collapses or decays, usually ironically with an aspect of the energy it was trying to eliminate. It’s the same reason why our societal system pushing us further into control & fear will result in an explosion of consciousness & rebellion (already is really). We just can’t exist without both.

higher consciousness

Now, let’s add to the diagram:

This is the concept of the trinity within the binary. It’s breaking out of black and white, and accepting the full spectrum of energy with embodiment and fluidity. You have to accept both sides of the pole to get the higher perspective, and to embrace the fullness of the spectrums of the Universe; one concept at a time. It just doesn’t work any other way. (This is actually the mechanism that stops spiritual bypassing from actually working. One way or another, you gotta come down from the consciousness trap and do the integration work to find the next rung of the ladder if you want to achieve higher consciousness.)

When you’re consciously on one side of the pole, you’re always on the other side unconsciously (creating Shadow). We can tell when we’re on one side of a pole because we’ll be in hard resistance to, or rallying against, insisting on, or hungrily seeking the other side. Being in integration is really being in a state of acceptance and choosing what to align with out of preference rather than compulsion or hard rejection.

An example: “everything must be consensual” is forcing energy. Understandable ethically? Yeah. But it’s still got that white dot in it, huh? That’s the paradox.

fractals - polarity as the structure of the universe

(Everything beyond this point is irrelevant to the course but I wanted to add it anyway.)

Now, we’ll go a little deeper:

This is called the Sierpiński Triangle. It’s a fractal. You zoom in or out and you’re looking at the same thing. It’s basically the simplest depiction of “as above, so below”. It’s also a great representation of the whole Universe. I wanna show you how it’s created just as a little fun side adventure to blow your mind & illustrate that it is in fact a Universal construct, built into the fabric of reality. Chaos meets order, like any fractal, like any aspect of the Universe.

Now that I’ve integrated so much polarity (and ever seeking more) this is how I see the Universe. Structures upon structures of poles, larger and smaller, up and down. Navigating dimensions, concepts, even people’s Psyches, is like climbing up and down on these poles like a weird triangular ladder. This triangle is also multidimensional in the sense that it can be displayed as a 3D structure too. But that’s enough fractals for now - the point is that everything is polarity. As above, so below. So understanding the fundamentals is absolutely key to understanding the self.

the universe is a torus

We’re far out of the range of information that’s necessary for this course but since I’m enjoying exploring unity & duality so much; the first image is what’s known as a torus sphere (the same torus that we refer to as a ‘torus field’ that envelops our body emanating out of our heart at the center). Technically in this image it’s what’s known as a ‘double torus’ in that it has 4 points of “entry” to the center. If it was a single torus it would be of Unity - the same unity consciousness that we’re aiming for as individuals seeking enlightenment, authenticity, and integrity. When it’s a double torus we enter the field of duality as seen in polarity and on the Yin Yang symbol - the discernment between light and dark, self and other. The Yin Yang can be overlaid on a double torus as, in my opinion, it’s actually representative of exactly this paradoxical 3D geometry but in a 2D representation.

the universe seeks balance

The last thing to understand about polarity is that the universe is perpetually seeking balance and equality - it’s technically always in balance but on a smaller scale we’re talking about things like the anxious being attracted to the avoidant and vice versa. Positive charge will always be attracted to negative charge, negative to positive, because the Universe is always seeking neutrality. It’s the same reason that people with equal and opposite wounds will always be attracted to each other; because we’re seeking to make our unconscious aspects conscious. Some of that attraction will consciously be in attempt to eliminate the other, that challenges us to integrate a wound we don’t want to look at, some will be genuinely enjoying another person’s company - or at least thinking we do until we stub our toe on our own Shadow. The more self integration you have, the more you return to a state of detachment; taking things like ‘easy come, easy go’ - it’s preference rather than compulsion.
